The word Aromatherapy is a fairly new one, but the art is said to be more than 5,000 years old.
The Ancient Egyptians usedperfumed oils extensively for their Health, Beauty and Religious Rituals andMagic for centuries all over the world. Plants and Herbal oils have been used to Heal,Appease the Gods, Invoke curses and Lift Spells. The earlier written records and their uses in Britianwas in the 13th Century, where they were used extensively in perfumes and during the Plague for their Antiseptic Qualities.
The use of essential oils seemed to wane in Britain with the introduction of synthetic drugs and chemicals, which unfortunately often brought with them many side effects. It was a chemist in the 1920’swho became interested in the medical aspects of the oils and he found that many of the oils contained better antiseptics than the chemical ones he was using.
